MainStreet Alexander City is a MainStreet Program, part of a nationwide network begun by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to support and enhance America's small towns. We are a 501c3 organization working to improve our local economy, to provide and support promotional events, to improve the appearance and function of downtown, and to encourage the restoration and preservation of our circa 1900 commercial architecture.
In the past we have worked with the City and others on the Roundabout project and other streetscape improvements, providing street furniture and plantings for downtown. We are working to provide improvements to Strand Park. In 2000 we gained National Register listing for our commercial district. We surveyed residential historic resources and expect designation of four residential National Register districts later this year. We will provide a plan for a new streetscape for Broad Street to be completed by the City under a Federal DOT T21 grant. We produced signage to direct visitors to our historic town center.
We received a grant allowing us to establish a matching grant program for façade restoration and historically appropriate signage. This produced visible improvements. |

We continue to offer architectural advice for building owners and have a small awning grant in place to encourage addition or replacement of awnings. We have sponsored or supported a number of promotional events designed to bring people to our city. Our Downtown Market, a producer only farmers market, will be held each Saturday beginning June 24 on Broad Street.
We make available materials to aid individuals interested in starting new businesses, and have sought and assisted several to open downtown. We work with the Chamber, Economic Development Alliance, Parks and Recreation and others to welcome and host visitors to our city. Our Shopper's Guide is made available to visitors to help them find our retail and restaurant members. Our SOS program is designed to help our schools while encouraging people to shop at home.
